Rumor Control:

Rumor: The Board does not value 12-step programs

Many individuals in Montgomery County’s Alcohol and Drug Addiction recovering community have heard that the ADAMHS Board for Montgomery County does not value the importance of 12-step programs in helping people recover from their addiction. Further that the ADAMHS Board does not permit its treatment agencies to hold 12-step meetings at their facilities.

Our Response:

This rumor is NOT true.

The ADAMHS Board and its staff recognize the importance of self-help groups, like 12-step programs, to assist and support people in their recovery efforts. We encourage agencies in our service delivery system to offer these programs at their facilities.

Because committed volunteers lead these programs they cannot be considered “treatment” and the ADAMHS Board cannot pay host agencies for these meetings.

If more information is needed please call the Board’s Public Affairs Director at 937-443-0416 ext. 104.
